College Football Week Five Preview: Cheerleader Edition

As we mention on a weekly basis, no team or cheerleader is safe as they appear on COED’s college football preview.  A top 10 ranking has been a gauntlet for teams to stay on pace for a shot at a BCS bowl, as four more top 10 teams fell last week (10 total in four weeks) – Mississippi, Penn State, California, and Miami (FL) – and Cal got absolutely shattered by Oregon.

No. 1 Florida (4-0) – bye week

Lucky for the Gators that they magically have a bye week following the nasty concussion that self-proclaimed Superman suffered last week.  It looks like he will be ready to suit up next week for the Gators first test at No. 4 LSU.

No. 2 Texas (4-0) – bye week

Perhaps there will be less teams in this preview that will fall since the two anchors on top of the rankings will both be spending Saturday navigating the cheerleading squad, rather than navigating the playing field.

No. 3 Alabama (4-0) at Kentucky (2-1)

Saturday, Oct. 3, 11:21 a.m. ESPN-GP / SEC Network

Talk about a rough schedule for Kentucky – first they get destroyed by Florida last week, and now they’re probably get slaughtered by Bama this weekend.  Bama leads the all-time series 34-2-1, and don’t expect things to change when they meet this Saturday in Lexington.

No. 4 LSU (4-0) at No. 18 Georgia (3-1)

Saturday, Oct. 3,  2:30 p.m. CBS (HD)

The Tigers keep moving up in the polls as teams in front of them continue to drop, but this tough road matchup against the Bulldogs may be the one that catapults them back into the 20s.  Georgia defeated LSU last season and they are currently on a roll, winning three in a row, while LSU barely squeaked by an inferior Mississippi State last week on the road.

No. 5 Boise State (4-0) vs. UC-Davis (1-2)

Saturday, Oct. 3, 7:00 p.m. ESPN-GP / KTVB

In the beginning of the season when Boise State beat Oregon, we thought that Oregon wasn’t really that good.  Now that Oregon ripped apart Utah and Cal, we are starting to believe that Boise State is really good…perhaps dangerously good.  Boise State is 3-0 all time against this FCS team, and should be 4-0 by the time we meet again next week for the Week Six COED preview.

No. 6 Virginia Tech (3-1) at Duke (2-2)

Saturday, Oct. 3, 11:00 a.m. ESPN 360

Finally VT gets a break.  After a season-opening loss to No. 3 Alabama, the Hokies have won three in a row – including big wins over No. 19 Nebraska and am impressive dismantling of No. 9 Miami (FL) last week.  This week they take a virtual off week when they travel to Duke for what should be a big easy victory.

No. 7 USC (3-1) at No. 24 California (3-1)

Saturday, Oct. 3,  7:00 p.m. ABC (HD) / ESPN-GP

Carroll’s crew slides back into the top 10 after bouncing back following their shocking loss at Washington.  Now it is Cal who is reeling after getting annihilated by the Ducks up in Oregon.  This could be another “upset alert” as the Golden Bears look to take advantage of a USC team who is still coping with the tragic weight-lifting accident suffered by Stafon Johnson earlier this week.

No. 8 Oklahoma (2-1) at No. 17 Miami (FL) (2-1)

Saturday, Oct. 3, 7:00 p.m. ABC (HD) / ESPN-GP

After an opening week loss to BYU that saw Heisman quarterback Sam Bradford KO-ed for a few weeks, the Sooners appear to be back on track, winning their last two games by a combined score of 109-0.  This week will be another tough test as they travel to Miami for a key matchup that could further alter the top half of the rankings – and if Miami is unlucky, we could see the return of Bradford to the huddle this Saturday.

No. 9 Ohio State (3-1) at Indiana (3-1)

Saturday, Oct. 3, 6:00 p.m.    BTN (HD)

The Buckeyes are once again the highest ranked Big Ten squad despite the fact that No. 13 Iowa, No. 22 Michigan and Wisconsin are still undefeated.  This week they do battle with a much improving Indiana team that was a Tate Forcier Fourth Quarter away from being 4-0.  Ohio State hasn’t allowed a single point since Matt Barkley led the Trojans to a game winning score three weeks ago in Columbus.

No. 10 Cincinnati (4-0) at Miami (OH) (0-4)

Saturday, Oct. 3,  12:00 p.m. ESPN 360

The Battle for the Victory Bell has seen the Bearcats take the last three meetings from the RedHawks.  This week’s matchup should be no different as Cincy is coming to town sporting their highest ranking ever.  Expect the good times to keep rolling in Cincinnati as they have outscored their opponents 173-56 so far this season.
