Colts and Dwight Freeney’s open door Policy is more of a Deception

This is the Super Bowl and these guys will give their arm and leg to play in this game.

With that in mind Freeney walking gingerly and listed as questionable for the game against the New Orleans Saints just looks like a ploy to keep the Saints on their heels.

Dwight Freeney2 Colts and Dwight Freeneys open door Policy is more of a DeceptionBut, with all the attention on Freeney not playing the spot light shines squarely on Raheem Brock who has suddenly gone from obscurity to the center ring in the Super Bowl’s media circus.

All the talk at media day was all about the right ankle injury to the Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney and how the Colts are going to play against the pass happy Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints offense.

Many have speculated that without Freeney the Colts defense might not stand a chance against the Saints offense.

Before the Conference Championship games, in my weekly picks article – Conference Championships – A-List Picks – I wrote “The Colts defense might not be flashy or even that entertaining, but they are the most productive squad still in the competition (Better than the Jets) – I know, am crazy.” (Click here to read the complete article) I believed then and I believe it even more now against the saints. The defense will be able to hold its own against the high scoring Saints with or without Freeney.

The Freeneys over exposed injury coverage has also lead to he’s supposed replacement getting lots of coverage. Raheem Brock the 31-year-old seventh-round draft pick in 2002 will share time with Robert Mathis on the defensive front zeroing in on the Saints’ Drew Brees.

Though Brock is a capable lineman, no one considers him comparable to Freeney, one of the league’s best pass rushers and the anchor of the Colts’ defense.

Brock, who has also played a little bit at linebacker, said he’s even lobbied to play on the other side of the ball with Peyton Manning and the Colts’ offense.

There’s no doubt in my mind that without Freeney on the field Sunday the saints have more flexibility on offense having to only deal with one pass rusher, but like I said above I find it strange that Freeney and the Colts are so open about the injury, this from an organization that wouldn’t even tell you if they will play their starters on a week 14 or 15 or even share who is really on the injury list.

All of a sudden they have found it helpful to have an open door policy? Don’t think so.

Is Dwight Freeney really injured? Probably, but one thing I can promise, is not as bad as they are making it sound and come Sunday – look for Freeney to drop Brees on the canvas at least – twice.
