[Check out the Weekly Showdown updates below the article] [With Both Sanchez and Tebow benched for the rest of the season we close this Showdown and Mark Sanchez by default wins the Showdow. Check out the week by week Showdown battle below the article]
Let me prefix my article by saying I believe what is been done to Mark Sanchez is unfair and I can even go as far as to call it criminal. In his first two years as the Jets QB one he (Sanchez) led the team to back to back AFC championship games and played unbelievably well in both playoff runs. Last season for some reason the Jets running game disappeared and their one time formidable defense could not stop anyone. To compound matters, the jets receiving core were complete atrocious dropping passes and then complaining about how they were not getting the ball, this in turn led to the complete fragmentation of the locker room and head coach Rex Ryan was like a deer in a headlight having no clue whatsoever what to do about it.

This offseason what does Mr. Ryan and the Jets front office do to rectify the internal decay? They went out and got the most polarizing athlete in America sports today and made him QB two or so we were told. As QB two he was flown in on a private jet and walked into a welcome to New York press conference fit for a king. You would have been forgiving if you thought President Obama or the risen Elvis Presley were the ones been expected.
Tim Tebow is not QB two material except you are a Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees. Let’s be clear here, Tebow is in no way an NFL Quarterback, he can’t throw the ball and when he does throw he has hurrable accuracy, and he can’t read defenses, but when the play breaks down he is almost unstoppable. So if you intend to draw up broken plays on every down, Tebow is your man.
But all that does not matter Tim Tebow has a cult like following no matter where he goes and these fans are passionate and diverse and are willing to pay top dollar for his Jerseys and game day tickets where they demand to see him on every down of every game.
Last season in Denver Kyle Orton did not stand a chance in hell to make it through the season as QB one, right from the pre-season the fans in Denver were already expressing their dissatisfaction with John Elway and what they considered to be deception. They claimed they were promised Tebow would start and they went out made bought his Jersey and even made it the highest selling Jersey in the NFL for a while and bought enough ticket to sell out almost every game before the season even began – only to see the Chicago Bears reject Kyle Orton as QB one.
Tebow did get his chance and the rest was history. Now no one can tell the Tebow maniacs out there anything anymore. All you hear now id all he does is win, he completes two passes against the Kansas City Chiefs and the defense pretty much kept them in the game for all of 58 minutes minutes but it was Tebow that won the game.
He stunk up the joint again against Chicago and needed Matt Prater to kick a 59-yard field goal and once again it was Tebow that won the game. This is what Mark Sanchez will have to deal with. Sanchez is the only QB in that locker room that happen to led any team to two AFC championship games, yet he is not considered to be a winner – Tebow is.
Mark Sanchez seem to be in a similar situation Kyle Orton was in at the beginning of last season. The New York fans have never really warmed up to Sanchez even when he was taking the team on improbable playoff runs all they could saw were his mistakes. And last season with everything that happen in that locker room somehow Sanchez ended up being the scape goat.
The Funny thing is Sanchez as a QB has actually improved every year in the league (2009 Pass Rat: 63.0, Comp % 53.8, 2010 Pass Rat: 75.3, Comp % 54.8, 2011 Pass Rat: 78.2, Comp % 56.7) yet all you hear is how much he has regressed.
Tim Tebow on the other hand is flat out horrible with a 46.5 comp % and still there are talks of him playing about 20 snaps every game. That is completely ridiculous, is he QB two or QB 1A? It is very obvious the Jets organization wants Tebow as their starting QB and at some point this season they will use the fans cries for Tebow to do so.
This NFL season we are going to be compiling various player head to head matchup competitions, these competitions will run all season long with weekly winners based on each player’s individual and team stats. We call these competitions “ShowDown”. With Tebow sharing snaps with Sanchez all season long this is going to be a fun Showdown between these two and eventually one of them will be relegated to actual second string. In the main time we are going to compare Tim Tebow’s and Mark Sanchez stats head to head on a weekly basis and the player with the better stats every game wins the weekly showdown. After 16 games the player with the better cumulative stats will be the Jets Número Uno QB.
So how does this work?
Every week each QB is scored based on five criteria with each criteria assigned a specific number: Touchdowns (TD = 10 points for each TD), Interceptions (INT = -5 points for each INT), Yards (YDS = Total yards (passing + rushing) divided by 10 (example: if QB total yards from game X is 362, then 362 divided by 10 = 36.2)), Wins (WIN = 10 points) and loses (LOSS = -10).
Give us your prediction, which QB will win the ShowDown and becomes the Jets Número Uno QB?
